The first ever broadcast of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue was made on Tuesday 11 April 1972. It was presented by Humphrey Lytteton, who would share the role with Barry Cryer for the first series.

The panellists were The Goodies: Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie. The line-up was completed by Jo Kendall. The first game to be played was One Song to the Tune of Another, which is still played on the show today.
​
There were 67 episodes broadcast during the 1970's, with Graeme Garden being the only person to appear in all of them. Tim appeared in 65 and Humph was chairman for 61.
​
There were 10 different panellists that played a total of 78 different games.
​
It was during the 1970's that Late Arrivals, the forerunner of Uxbridge English Dictionary, Limericks, Missed Hits, One Song to the Tune of Another, Sound Charades, Sounds Peculiar, Straight Face, Unlikely Quotations and Word for Word were all played, as was Mornington Crescent.
Pick Up Song was called 'Sing-a-Long' and only played 3 times.

Colin Sell was pianist in 33 episodes, with Dave Lee playing in 30. Leon Cohen and David Firman played in 2 each.
​
John Cassels produced 30 episodes, with Geoffrey Perkins producing 19 and Simon Brett producing 14.
