The first Mornington Crescent match was broadcast by BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday 29th August 1978. Humphrey Lyttelton presided over the match, which was played by Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Barry Cryer and Willie Rushton. Barry won.

On 5th September 1978 the first rule variations were used on the show: Jolliph’s Permutations pertains in the lower triangle only.
During the 1970's Mornington Crescent was played 23 times, including two shows when it was played twice.

On the 27th August 1979 two audience members were invited to take part. The amateurs are listed here, below the professional players. Jim Cleary, a headteacher, was disqualified during the round he took part in.
